18th Birthday

Well, here's some pics that my dad took for a birthday party. It was sorta treated like a wedding also so pictures of what the birthday girl wore were also taken.

The pictures were taken with either a Canon EOS 1D Mark II n or a Canon EOS 7D. Too lazy to label which ones.

The 1D Mark II n was a real help here since even in the worst lighting conditions this camera was still able to auto focus on the things that my dad wanted wanted.

My dad was also thinking of using his EOS 5D Mark II, but decided not too in the end since 3 cameras would have been overkill.

These are just some of my favorites from the party.

Oh, also the birthday girl wore two dresses for the party so don't be surprised to see her in some pictures with a white dress and others with a purple dress.

That is some rich family to throw a banquet for an 18th birthday. I spent my 18th in my bed, hugging a big pillow. :(

Lol@last pic with the jeans at a debut. If only she wore a wife beater and shorts.
But that's a nice dress that girl is wearing in the back with black/magenta.

I am always surprised at how much money is spent on debuts. They're treated like weddings!

...Who doesn't do that! I just had my 18 birthday party a few days ago and being the non girl that I am I saw it only fitting to go to Canada's Wonderland, rides are fun. Why spend a birthday showing off your parents money?

If you come from the Midwest or the South, you have undoubtedly heard of debutante balls and the whole "Southern Belle" thing that happens when girls turn 18.

Usually, at the beginning of debutante season, a lot of the town's "old money" people (i.e. people with last names like Getty, Rockefeller, Bloomberg, etc.) will come together to form a charity event. In my town, it was always to raise money for the local Opera, which wasn't exactly a charity but a non-profit organization. Anyways, the parents of the selected girls are expected to "donate" a certain amount of money. Usually, no one in those circles openly talks about money but because of the amount of gossip that goes around, the parents will try to outdo each other. From my understanding, people donate anywhere between $20k and $100k so that their daughters can be "presented" to the world. It isn't cheap. All the debutantes are listed in the Gossip/Socialite section of the newspaper with a picture and it will usually say in a snooty tone, "Dr. and Mrs. John. H. Smith present their debutante daughter Jane Smith."

I know all about this because I went to a well-known private high school that was a bastion for old WASP money, where all the girls were formally "presented" when they turned 18. Of course, a lot of us were going to that school for free, so you could really sense the huge socioeconomic divide between wealthy and poor during deb season.

It's usually more common in older states in the South and in New England where a lot of old money remains. In places like California, the nouveau riche usually don't participate in things like that. Also, old money people have a certain disdain for new money people.

Wow, awesome info like always Claudewolfe. I believe one of my friend's party was around $20-30k for a ball room and all the meals/receptions. It just astonishes me the amount of money put forward but, I guess I can't really see the magnitude of how important it is to the Filipinos.

I'm a little confused when you said that you went to a well established school for free. What did you mean by that?

Aside from that, it's funny because today one of my mentors talked about how students from private schools have basically "bought" their marks. Sigh, another thing that astonishes me is the amount of variance for admissions. Lol.

Let me explain: There are a lot of big name private high schools in New England and in Texas. These secondary schools cost a ton of money. However, for diversity purposes, they cannot admit students based purely on their ability to pay tuition. So, once or twice a year, they will have a test, open to the general public (usually kids finishing 8th grade) and the high scoring students get a free ride through high school. This allows them to admit based on merit. And even if you don't win the free ride, most of these places offer a lot of financial aid. High schools like Philips Academy (Andover) have so much endowment ($750 million) that they rival major universities. It's not hard for these places to let a few token students go for free to enhance their diversity profile.

Usually, I estimate that 70% of the students have the means to pay their own way and 30% get by on financial aid/free ride. The kids in school form social groups based on socioeconomic background. So, when debutante season comes around, you KNOW the social pecking order. It's not intentional, just human nature to stratify like that.

A few examples of private high schools: Hockaday in Dallas Texas, where George Bush's twins (Jenna and Barbara) went, is a big school for old money. Other examples of well-known private high schools are St. Marks (where Al Gore went), Philips Exeter, Andover (where most US Presidents went), Sidwell Friends (Obama's kids), Georgetown Day, Deerfield, Lawrenceville, etc.

And yes, you are right, there is an unfair advantage that comes with that kind of education and money. You do get coddled. A lot of these kids wouldn't survive in the public school system. However, if I had the resources, I would not hesitate to send my kids to one of those big name east coast private schools.

One of the things that I loved that my dad did is that each photo with the exception of the first one had a main focus in the picture.
